Release date: 15/07/2020 Label:
World famous London collective The Kingdom Choir have announced the release of their first original song, Real Love, out 15th July. Choir members have come together with this joyous song to lift the nation’s spirits as we emerge from lock down and to raise much-needed funds for UK domestic abuse charity Refuge. Real Love is a celebration of everything the choir represents and is filled to the brim with joy, hope, inspiration and, of course, love.
The Kingdom Choir has become known for its united sound, infectious energy and brilliant performances. Led by Britain’s ‘Godmother of Gospel’ Karen Gibson, the choir is a sterling example of the unity within the British gospel community. Whilst the choir had performed for many notable figures since its inception in 1994 (including the Queen, President Bill Clinton and Nelson Mandela), it was the performance of debut single Stand By Me - which reached number one in the US Gospel Charts - at the Royal Wedding in 2018 that catapulted them onto the global stage having been viewed by two billion people. This led to worldwide acclaim, with sold out tours including the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Hollywood Bowl. Twenty five members of the Choir flew specially to Sydney to perform at the closing ceremony of the Invictus Games. Their debut album won the prestigious BPI Breakthrough Award, making them the first choir to achieve this accolade.
This single arrives at an unprecedented time; a time, for many women and children across the UK who are victims of domestic abuse, of fear and isolation. Since lockdown began, demand for Refuge’s helpline has rocketed by almost 66% and it’s vital the charity continue to provide these life-saving services for those in need. With the help of The Kingdom Choir and Real Love, Refuge can continue to provide safe havens, community-based services and run the National Domestic Abuse Helpline.
Karen Gibson, conductor and founder of The Kingdom Choir, said: We pray for the spirit of real love to take precedence in a time of fear and uncertainty and to bring some happiness and joy to every listener. This single is The Kingdom Choir’s contribution to this. We want survivors all over the world to know they are brave, seen, heard and loved; that they are not alone. If we can create more awareness, facilitate change, give those who are struggling back their voice or alter the trajectory of a life for some, then this single will have achieved something. We hope you enjoy the track and help us to spread its message far and wide.
Sandra Horley CBE, Chief Executive of Refuge, said: Refuge is incredibly grateful to the Kingdom Choir for supporting its life-saving work through this uplifting single. The Covid-19 crisis has brought much-needed attention to the devastating impact of domestic abuse, which is a matter of life or death for thousands of women and children across the country.
Refuge has seen a huge increase in demand for its Helpline and website services during Covid-19, and every penny we raise helps Refuge to provide life-saving, specialist services around the clock. If you need help recognising the signs of abuse, you can find information and resources on www.refuge.org.uk. Refuge’s Freephone 24-Hour National Domestic Abuse Helpline is also available on 0808 2000 247, and online at www.nationaldahelpline.org.uk. Domestic abuse is a crime and you are not alone. Refuge stands with you today, tomorrow and in the future.
Real Love, the new song from The Kingdom Choir in aid of Refuge, is out 15th July.
