Being labelled as 2017's Summer Anthem by many, Pine & Ginger is a collaboration between 17-year-old LA-based singer Amindi K. Fro$t, Jamaican artist Tessellated and producer Valleyz that is leading a new wave of forward thinking Dancehall records.
After meeting through SoundCloud, Valleyz and Amindi hit it off and began working on records together, sending ideas back and forth to collaborate on. “I loved the way Valleyz took influence from different genres in his productions, which is something I love to do in my music” Amindi recalls. “I'd had the idea for writing about pineapple and ginger [a traditional Caribbean recipe] for some time as it's a drink my mom always made at home over the holidays. When Valleyz sent the beat it fit it perfectly. I hadn't worked on a track with Dancehall or Reggae influence on it for some time, but growing up with Jamaican parents, it's a huge part of my culture and who I am. I finished writing and recorded my vocals straight away and emailed them across to Valleyz.”
Valleyz roommate, Tessellated who was studying in Orlando whilst working on music heard a demo of the track and instantly knew it had the potential to be special. “Coming from Jamaica I know what people want to hear on a Dancehall song, and I knew as soon as I heard this that people would love it.” He wrote his verse, added the horns and helped tweak the arrangement. “All in all the song came together really quickly” Valleyz added. “After it launched on SoundCloud we were getting tweets and emails from all over the world from labels, publishers, and even a few celebrities posting up how much they love the track. There were people posting videos of them dancing to the song, some people even started making memes. It was crazy. I think we were all surprised at how quickly the track was growing”.
Pine & Ginger is available to buy or stream on all major platforms now.
